Right Tile for the Right Space

Have you ever found the perfect shirt to match your new favorite pants and then realized that the store didn’t have your size? This can sometimes happen when it comes to tile and stone, too! Well, it may not be exactly the same, but it’s definitely similar. This is because all tile is completely different. Some work great in outdoor spaces, while others cannot handle the heat. Some are perfect for swimming pools, while others will crack after being submerged in water for too long. This is definitely important to know before purchasing tile.

The great thing about Bottega is that we have all of the information regarding any tile you are interested in with us. We can tell if the tile is durable enough for heavy foot traffic or even if it would work in a steam room. All tile is completely different. Different products work for different locations and purposes. Let’s take a look at some popular symbols that are used to describe tile and what they mean.

These icons are an easy way of determining what products work best for your space. Many companies use these, while others use PEI ratings. The PEI rating is a measurement of a surface enamel’s resistance to abrasion. The PEI rating is on a 5-point scale, which does not inclue a 0 or “Not Rated” category. Let’s take a look at each PEI class and what those tiles can be installed for.

PEI Ratings

0 - Light-duty wall tiles only; unsuitable for floor use

1 - Wall use only in residential and commercial projects; unsuitable for floor use
(Shower surrounds are often PEI-1)

2 - Walls and light-duty floors
(Often used in residential bathrooms)

3 - Countertops, walls, and floors with normal foot traffic; useful for all residential purposes

4 - Useful for all residential purposes as well as medium-traffic commercial locations

5 - All residential and heavy-traffic commerical and institutional locations
(Typically only seen for flooring and rarely in residential properties)
